About us

The One Part Per Million campaign is the brainchild of a group of dentists frustrated by the high levels of decay in children’s teeth.

Water fluoridation can reduce the number of children having general anaesthetics for extractions in hospital, the sad and human cost of extensive dental decay. The OPPM dentists came together to lobby for water companies to introduce fluoride at a ratio of one part per million to every litre of drinking water(mg/L) in areas where deprivation is highest. Other important measures recommended by the dental profession include better diets, the exclusion of fizzy drinks and better and regular toothbrushing. But the most dramatic improvement can be achieved through fluoridation of water supplies.

The OPPM campaign was born in Hull, where children’s oral health is among the worst in the country and has since been extended to the North East. However, the movement is a national one, supported by Local Dental Committees throughout England as well as doctors and social justice organisations.
